In
the fall of 2001, the Department of the Environment and Local
Government released the document, ‘Waste Reduction &
Diversion – An Action Plan for New Brunswick’. In
order to ensure province-wide consistency, the Province established
standards for solid waste commissions, summarized as follows:
4 Each
Regional Solid Waste Commission would be required to implement
region-wide recycling programs for:
• Corrugated cardboard, newsprint, box board and office
paper by December 31, 2003
• High and low density polyethylene plastics (#1 and
2) by December 31, 2004
• Composting of all organic waste by December 31, 2006

Each
Regional Solid Waste commission develop a Waste Reduction
and Diversion Plan to be submitted to the Minister of the
Environment and Local Government for review and approval.
The plan must provide for:
• Region-wide programs
• Have provision for disposal of household hazardous
wastes
• Include a public awareness and education strategy
