The Province of New Brunswick has set waste diversion standards for the solid waste commissions.

In the fall of 2001, the Department of the Environment and Local Government released the document, ‘Waste Reduction & Diversion – An Action Plan for New Brunswick’. In order to ensure province-wide consistency, the Province established standards for solid waste commissions, summarized as follows:

• High and low density polyethylene plastics (#1 and 2) by December 31, 2004
• Composting of all organic waste by December 31, 2006

4 Each Regional Solid Waste commission develop a Waste Reduction and Diversion Plan to be submitted to the Minister of the Environment and Local Government for review and approval. The plan must provide for:

• Region-wide programs
• Have provision for disposal of household hazardous wastes
• Include a public awareness and education strategy
